High 5 Compression Sock etiquette
For socks visit www.dcmsport.com and use code imtalk for a 20% discount. Also
check out http://www.zensah.com/
1.Do not wear over the top of tights or with ¾ tights especially – ala Gordo
2.Do not wear with casual clothing except in the privacy of your own home. The wearing of socks combined with speedo’s should result in a downtrou
3.Do not wear to bed with no other clothing on (I have a short story about this)
4.Females – do not wear with mini skirt and school shirt or people might get ideas
5.Never with sandals/Crocs. Period.
6.If you’re putting these on in T2, and it takes you 5 minutes and you’re cramping up as you try to get them on, you might want to question why you’re doing this in the first place.
Finally, all these rules can (and are) broken at the Underpants Run in Kona.

Age Grouper of the Week Jenny Timms has just knocked 1hr 40mins off her 70.3 PB going from 7hrs 31mins last
year at HIMUK down to 5hrs 52mins at this years Wimbleball event. This combined with studying for her Phd and part time job is a great achievement and worthy in my opinion of AGOTW!! She finished 15th woman overall and 3rd in her age group thus missing qualification to the World Champs in Clearwater by 1 place!!!! That on a course like Wimbleball which is widely regarded as one of the most savage 70.3 courses in the world.
Website of the Week Ben Barnett sent through this weeks website, here’s what he sent: I know its not IM related but you know John will just love this stuff and I'm sure others will as well. This guy has been posting up some old skool races from 1997 of the F1 series in
Australia. Guys like Crowie and Macca used to race.

Age Grouper of the Week I'd like to submit Todd Crandell for age grouper of the week.He started Racing for
Recovery (www.racingforrecovery.com ) after battling alcohol and drug addiction and uses triathlon and activity to help others overcome addiction. His book, from addict to ironman is excellent. He's from Sylvania (near Toledo), Ohio, USA. Why he's age grouper of the week, though, is that he's AMAZING ;) He's done Ultraman twice, a zillion ironmans (definitely not the "I've done one and I'm done kinda guy) but
tomorrow he's doing Ironman Switzerland ONE WEEK AFTER HE DID IRONMAN GERMANY!
His germany results are as follows:
place: 1453. Crandell Todd USA, total 12:12.06 age M40.
SWIM 1:08.40,
BIKE 6:24.40
RUN 4:27.31
Todd's an inspiration to so many people with his fundraising and ironmans and still has a great family with a wife and 4 kids!

Age Grouper of the Week I have a bone too pick with you both. The recent show which contained the "Forestman" results was a great show and I was out running listening carefully ready too hear my training buddys name be mentioned as the winner. But no. His name was myteriously missing from your show. So firstly can I correct you on the results and ask you to make sure that AUSTIN MILLS who races for the VOTWO team gets the credit he deserves, please. With all that in mind I would also like to put his name forward as an AGE GROUPER OF THE WEEEEEEEEEEEK. Austin is a top bloke, he is the most down too earth and reliable bloke you will ever meet. There is no arrogance or snobbery to what he does and how he handles himself. I have trained with him over the past 3 years and he has always been the first too get too training and the last too leave. He has time for everyone and is often seen out supporting or helping out at different events in the area. Finally he has been made redundant recently and has not moaned complained or felt sorry for himself he has really been a great bloke here in the Dorset Triathlon community.
Website of the Week Jay sent through this weeks website. He has put videos for IM Hawaii for these years 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 2006, 2007, 2008. IM New Zealand 2009. To find them easily go to http://www.youtube.com/whereisjay and they are all in

Age Grouper of the Week Penny Comings sent throught this weeks age grouper. Here’s what she said: Nick Kensington should be age grouper of the year. Known for always pushing the boundaries (he did the three world champs in three weekends in Hawaii in 2005 – ITU age group, Kona, Xterra) has just completed two Ironmans in two consecutive weekends. Not only did he compete in IM Austria and do a 10 minute PB of 9.25, he then went to Roth the following weekend and smashed everyone’s doubts and pulled out a 9.06. A new 20 minute PB! He has trained amazingly hard after a rocky start to the year and is reaping the rewards of pure unadulterated Ironman passion and determination. He now has his eyes firmly set on Kona and being the fastest kiwi age grouper. Kona will be his fourth IM of the year; by the end of 2009 he will have completed five – IM China, IM Austria, Roth, Kona and IM Mexico. This legend has to be age grouper of the week, month and 2009.
High 5
Being new to triathlon later in life, sent in from Annette Lee
1.Take no notice of John and Bevan’s ageist comments because secretly they’re hanging on your every word because they know you’ve seen and done it all before – this applies to many younger athletes if you speak to them, they’re in awe of you.
2.Be proud of the fact that you’re 40/50/60/70 something and not only competing but look pretty bloody good for your age.
3.Be realistic about what you can achieve, but be proud of EVERY achievement however big or small.
4.Remember your joints are new to the sport and not clapped out like some athletes your age who’ve been at it for years.
5.Utilise the mental strength that comes with age to your advantage, after all you’ve got nothing to lose.
And 6. because it appears you always have a 6th high 5, NEVER let anyone tell you
you’re too old to do anything!!!
Website of the Week Stewart Milne sent through this weeks website, here’s what he said: My website of the week is: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/ Lets you calculate your speed based on gears, crank lengths, tyre sizes etc. I love stuff like this but then I am a geek. I also wear rubber gloves to keep my hands clean while fiddling with my bike!

Age Grouper of the Week I am nominating Jamie Sinclair from Rugby Triathlon Club. Jamie is a converted
footballer who took up triathlon and after one season did IMUK in 2007. He finished in 13.20 and had a bike split of over 7 hours.
This year he has trained with a group of athletes a lot stronger than him and on every bike ride, he has been dropped and ended up throwing his toys out of the pram. This includes a training camp in the alps where he was the first to give up on the climbs and questioned why we went up hills only to come down them again. He moaned like a girl all the way through the camp. However, he got his act together and stuck to the training plan in the run up to Roth and delivered a 5.26 bike leg...5 mins quicker than the others in the group who previously ribbed him for getting dropped. He finished in 10.49, with a 2 and a half hour PB. With a little more work on the run he could go close to sub 10. His nickname is ASBO, Anti Social Behaviour Order, because of his tourettes like swearing when he gets into a bad patch during training. A worthy contender for AGER of the Week.
High 5
Chris Day sent through this weeks High 5:
1) If it’s ok to rug up to go skiing then its o.k. to rug up to train outdoors – use the
same logic, keep feet, hands and ears warm. Hot baths to relax are ok too.
2) Use indoor trainers to your advantage - treadmills and bike trainers allow for focus on specifics… 30min overgear work can really be that without any stop lights! Also helps with the mental battle – 3 or 4 hours on an indoor trainer or treadmill is a mental as well as
physical workout.
3) Podcasts for those indoor sessions – IM Talk for the insights, accents and humor, Paul Okenfeld, Podrunner… keep the tempo up.
4) Experiment with nutrition when indoors – a safe way to work on what works
5) Swim even when it’s cold – not all swims will be tropical! This is where the HTFU saying comes into play. Some pools are indoors, some are outdoors and heated…
6) Vitamin C, chili and garlic… keeps those colds at bay with lots of good and fresh food… personally I find that a diet rich in good oils, some chili and garlic works a treat in keeping my immune system strong.
